As academic libraries shift towards digital-first resource models, efficient Electronic Resource Management Systems (ERMS) have become crucial. This study compares two open-source solutions: CORAL ERMS, a well-established modular system used by academic institutions, and the new E-Resource Management module in Koha, an extension of the Koha integrated library system. Using system documentation, implementation case studies, and comparative data visualisations generated with Python (with the Pandas library) and R, both platforms were evaluated based on functional criteria, license management, workflow automation, integration capabilities, customisation, and usage reporting. The findings show that CORAL provides a robust framework with comprehensive support for licensing, access control, and administrative collaboration. In contrast, Koha’s ERM module emphasises integration with external knowledge bases and automated usage data collection but lacks the institutional adoption and functional depth found in CORAL. The study revealed limited user awareness and implementation of Koha’s module, suggesting a need for further development and community engagement. By providing a side-by-side comparison of features and limitations, this study helps academic libraries make informed decisions regarding the adoption of ERM. While CORAL emerges as a reliable option for immediate deployment, Koha ERM shows potential for innovation in environments already using the Koha ecosystem.
