Analyses the basis of Ranganathan's chain indexing and its value in the systematic subject index to information retrieval. Impact of hierarchical chain in the formation of chains in POPSI and PRECIS are also discussed. The current approaches to on-line search strategies do stimulate the formation of chain in subject heading formulations. It is found to be an economical approach to subject-indexing in service libraries.Downloads
