Abstract

The importance of SDI service to engineers is recognized. The need for in-house software development is brought out. The procedure of developing users' profile is narrated briefly. Designing a database and conducting a search procedure are described in detail. The deviation of Search Retrieval System and the usefulness of term records are explained. The step by step method of formulating a search expression from a user's profile and deriving the final expression with appropriate Boolean connectors are explained. The development of three programmes using COBOL language following the modular approach is highlighted. The training provided in CTIC in software development and its impact is briefly described. The modification carried out in database coverage and search facilities are described. A system flowchart developed for the modified system and a specimen print out for the SDI service are presented.

Problems encountered in developing the computerised SDI system. are briefly analysed. The encouragement received in developing the in house SDI system and the need to meet the users information requirement correctly and expeditiously is taken note of. The challenge of developing suitable hardware and software for developing an effective SDI system and the need for an innovative and purposeful interaction between information scientists and R&D engineers is recognised.
