Abstract

Describes the overall structure and economic characteristics of the scientific and technical information communication activities in the United States; highlights the major recent advances and some persistent problems in the area; and forecasts the likely developments in scientific and technical communication by the year 2000. The cumulative decision of information managers within large organizations and information brokers will appreciably affect the structure of the future STI communication enterprise. The demand and associated purchasing power as the prime determinant of future STI services will receive a boost. Electronic operations will grow in importance.
